Goalkeepers

Ashley Harrison (Ash)
Height 6ft. Weight 12st 2lbs. Promising young goalkeeper who rejoined the club in July 1999 after a spell with Dover Athletic. Previously played for Southend Manor and Basildon United. He has represented Great Britain Universities. His most memorable match was playing for Basildon United in the FA Youth Cup against Chelsea winning 3 - 1. 
Paul Newell
Experienced Goalkeeper. Born in Greenwich, 23rd of February 1969. Has spent his career at Southend United, Leyton Orient, Colchester United (loan) Barnet, Darlington, St Albans City & Dagenham & Redbridge. Signed for Canvey November 2001. Signed as cover for Ashley, but also as a goalkeeping coach

Glen Johnson
Born 19th September 1985, currently playing in the U18s, the Reserves and has also made the subs bench for several cup games. He made his first XI debut in December 2001 against Bishops Stortford. Glen has represented Essex County Schoolboys for the past 3 years. He has a very bright future at the club and one to look out for in the near future.


Defenders

Micky Bennett (Benno)
Born 27th July 1969 in Camberwell. Height 5ft 11ins. Weight 13st 6lbs. Signed from Brighton in  August 1999 where he was player of the year. Strong, quick skilful player who is equally at home in midfield or defence. He has also played for Leyton Orient, Cambridge C, Cardiff C, Millwall, Charlton Athletic., Brentford and Wimbledon. Has represented England U19's touring Brazil. 
Mick Bodley (Bods)
Born 14th September 1967 in Hayes. Began his career as a schoolboy with Chelsea and progressed through to the first team before joining Northampton Town. Had a three year spell with Barnet, then followed Barry Fry to Southend United. Mick had loan spells with Gillingham  and Birmingham City prior to joining Peterborough United, where he was club captain. Left the Posh in 1999, before joining  St. Albans and then Dagenham & Redbridge at the start of the 1999/2000 season. signed for Canvey on May 17th 2000.

Garry Britnell (Britts)
Vastly experienced 1964 born defender or midfield player who began with Canvey Island in the Essex Senior League before spells with Chelmsford City and  Dartford. He then enjoyed a successful period with Enfield before re-joining Canvey in July 1994. Has been a 'stalwart' of the Gulls whose contribution has helped the club move up through the league.
Ben Chenery (Cheners)
Born 28th January 1977. Height 6' 1" Weight 12st 5lb. Started his career at Luton Town, on 3rd March 1995 where he made 2 appearances. Joined Cambridge United on 2nd July 1997.  Ben made 96 league appearances for the U's, scoring 2 goals, before joining Kettering Town on 22nd July 2000. He joined Canvey in December 2000.
Peter Smith   (Buzz)
Born 12th July 1969 in Cannock. Peter last played at Canvey during the 1st round FA Cup clash on 13th November 1995 for Brighton. Joined Brighton in 1994 and made 122 appearances, 18 substitutions and scored 5 goals. He signed from Woking on a two year deal in July 2000, after a loan period.
 
Steve Ward (The Ginger Sex God)
1972 born central defender who spent many year with Essex neighbours and rivals, Grays Athletic, progressing from the youth and reserve teams to make over 400 appearances for the first team. Steve transferred to Canvey Island in October 1996 for a £3000 fee. He is currently a P.E. teacher in Gravesend.
 

Midfield

Danny Bolt (C) SUFCDanny Bolt
Born 5th February 1976 in Wandsworth. He started as a trainee with Fulham before making moves to: Slough Town, Woking, Dover & Sutton Utd. Danny is 5ft 7ins and weighs 11st 8lbs. Signed for Canvey Island on the 22nd March 2002 on a free transfer from Kingstonian.

Chris Duffy (Doofy)
A tall, athletic and skilful midfield player who possesses boundless energy. Became Canvey Island's record signing when joining from Conference side Northwich Victoria for £5,000 in July 1999. Played in the 1996 FA Umbro Trophy final for the Vic's and has also seen service with Crewe and Wigan.

John Kennedy (JK) 
Born 19th August 1978 in Newmarket. A former Ipswich midfielder,  who has come up through the youth system at the Suffolk Premiership Club, playing 6 games for Ipswich first team and making 2 appearances as sub. He signed for Canvey on the 3rd August 2000. 

Spencer Knight
Born in 1978. Signed from Harrow Borough in November 2001. Previous clubs include St. Albans City, Arlsley & Luton Reserves.
Adam Miller (Millsie)
A promising 1982 born midfielder signed on the 20th October 2000, from Ipswich Town Youth Academy. Also had a trial with Southend United, and was offered a contract, but a change of management put paid to that.
Ian Thompson (Tommo)
Born in 1982 the winger signed from Norwich Academy in February 2001. Spent a month this season, on loan to Great Wakering Rovers & Bishop's Stortford.
Mark Stimson  (Stimmo)
Born 27th December 1967 in Plaistow. Another of the Islanders' vastly experienced former professionals, Mark, is a midfielder who started his career at Tottenham Hotspur. Went on to make big-money moves to Newcastle United (£200,000) and Portsmouth (£100,000) and also had spells with Southend (£25,000) and Leyton Orient (free). Totaled over 240 League appearances, and 4 goals before signing for Canvey Island in August 1999. Made his football league debut for Tottenham on the 11th May 1987 v Everton away. (Lost 1 - 0).  Represented his country in the England National Game XI against USA in March '02.
Steve Tilson (Tilly)
Born 27th July 1966 in Wickford. Height 5ft 11in. Weight 13st. Highly experienced and respected player, joined Canvey Island in July 1997. Steve previously spent no less than nine seasons with Southend United where he made 239 Football League appearances, scoring 26 goals (1989 - 97). He had a brief spell on loan to Brentford (Sept '93) before joining Canvey. Steve is team captain and is a very influential and important member of the squad. in 1998/9 he scored 34 league and cup goals, and was voted player of the season by both players and supporters. Previous clubs include Basildon United, Bowers United and Witham Town.

Forwards

Lee Boylan
Born in Chelmsford on the 2nd September 1978, Lee previously played for: West Ham, Trelleborg, Kingstonian, Exeter, Hayes and Heybridge Swifts. Signed August 17th 2001 after a highly impressive trial period.
Liam Bright
Aged 18. Son of reserve team coach Micky Bright, from our reserve side. Has had spells gaining first team experience at Witham Town, Tilbury & Great Wakering Rovers. Before joining Canvey's senior squad.
Paul Cobb (Cobby)
Signed in August 2001 from Dagenham & Redbridge. previous clubs include Leyton Orient, Enfield and Purfleet. Joined Dagenham in 1997, and scored almost 100 goals for the now conference club.
Neil Gregory  (Greggors)
Born 7th October 1972. in Zambia. Height 5ft 11ins. Weight 13st 7lbs. Signed from Colchester United. Previous clubs include Ipswich Town, Peterborough (loan) & Torquay (loan). Transferred to Colchester for £50,000 on 26th Mar '98. In the summer of '99 he was on loan to the Boston Bulldogs. After a two month loan period Neil, signed for Canvey on Fri 4th February 2000, on free transfer for a 3 year contract period. Made 119 football league appearances and scored 29 goals.
Andy Jones (Jonah)
1970 born striker and the longest serving player at the club. Andy has been at Park Lane since July 1992, finishing as the club's top scorer in most of them. His 200+ Canvey goals have played a major part in the club's rise from the Essex Senior League to today's position. Before joining Canvey he played for Basildon United, Purfleet, Rainham Town and Billericay Town.
Steve Parmenter (Parms or Umpa Lumpa)
Born 17th January 1977 in Chelmsford. Height 5ft 8ins. Weight 12st. Signed in November 98 from Kingstonian. Steve was a trainee with QPR (May 1995 - July 1996) before spending two years with Bristol Rovers. He made 18 Football League appearances and scored 2 gaols for Rovers and spent a period with Conference League Yeovil Town. He joined Kingstonian on a free transfer. Played for Wales U21's. Has also played for Southend United as a Youth Trainee.
Wayne Vaughan (Wayno)
Height 5'9". Weight 70kg. Born 15th February 1980. Wayne used to be with Tottenham Hotspurs Youth Academy earlier in his career. Lives in Dagenham. He is a left footed striker. Signed for Canvey on the 15th August 2000, for a 2 year period. Played for Essex County and England Schoolboys.

Jeff King
A former Canvey Island player, Jeff became assistant manager in the 1991/92 season, stepping up to the manager's job a year later. Aged 41  his term as manager has seen the club's meteoric rise from Essex Senior League to Ryman League Premier Division, an impressive four levels. Jeff is a charismatic leader whose commitment to the club makes him very popular and respected.

Glenn Pennyfather
Born 11th February 1963 in Billericay. 

Essex boy Glenn Pennyfather made his Southend United debut in 1980 at the tender age of seventeen. He went on to play over 230 games for the Blues as a battling, hard-tackling midfielder, having started with them in the full-back position.

Julian Dicks  (The Terminator)
Born 8th August 1968 in Bristol. Left back. Signed on November 7th 2001. Julian spent 11 years at West Ham, and has two international 'B' Caps, as well as playing for Birmingham City and Liverpool. West Ham Career: 1988 -93 & 1994-99; League appearances - 159 & 103; League Goals - 29 & 21; Cup appearances 33 & 20; Cup Goals - 7 & 4.  Released January 2002
Ashley Nicholls
Born 30th October 1981. Ashley signed on a months loan to Canvey Island from Ipswich Town in February 2002. His previous clubs include two spells with Ipswich Town where he was a regular in the reserves side last season and Ipswich Wanderers of the Jewson League. Ashley is 5'11" and weighs in at 11st 11lb.
Now returned to Ipswich Town March 2002.

Clark Hunt (Clarky)
Signed on after an extremely impressive trial period with the club. Played youth football at Gillingham and has represented the England U18s. Clark was released November 2001, where he then went on to play for Chalfont St. Peter. Now released by Chalfont St. Peter March 2002.  
Adam Tanner ('T')
Joined the club in January 2001 from Colchester United, Adam previously had a short spell at Peterborough but spent most of his earlier career at Ipswich Town.  He was born in Maldon on 25th October, 1973.  Described as a utility midfielder/defender, he played twice for the Us and came on four times as a sub.
Adam is 6' tall and weighs 12 stones.  Released February 2002
Neil Lampton
Signed for the reserves in December 2001, made his first team debut against Southend Manor in January 2001. Released mid-season
 

Other Canvey Players

Craig Davidson (Braintree Town) & Steve Clark (Aylesbury) both departed during the close season.
